NETWORKING SESSIONS
Attendees will have an opportunity to engage and network with colleagues in an informal discussion around the topics listed below. In addition, there will be open networking rooms that attendees can use as informal space to connect with colleagues on a topic of their choosing.
Tuesday, may 16th (3:45 pm - 4:25 pm)
Networking Session - ED/IES Small Business Innovation Research Project Demos
This networking session will showcase education technology products being developed through the ED/IES Small Business Innovation Research program. The session will feature four projects through short demonstrations of the products and an overview of the research. The four products all employ artifical intelligence (AI) to personalize learning in areas including early childhood literacy, English learning, hands-on science, and an assistive technology to support students who are blind or visually impaired to learn science. IES researchers who attend will have an opportunity to learn about the ED/IES SBIR program, and to ask questions about the projects and network with the developers during and after the session.
Networking Session - Launching Learners into College, Careers, and Beyond: Creating Seamless Systems
This series of networking sessions will bring together researchers interested in special education, transition, career and technical education, postsecondary, and adult education research. During the Tuesday session, participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm with other researchers about how to create seamless systems that help to facilitate the pursuit of postsecondary education and/or careers. Attendees in each session will share insights from their work in a lively “popcorn” (round-robin) format, learn about others’ work and perspectives, and leave with plenty of food for thought.
Networking Session - Meetup of NCSER Early Career Principal Investigators
This networking session will bring together Principal Investigators (PIs) of NCSER-funded Early Career Development and Mentoring grants. PIs will have an opportunity to network and discuss issues related to engaging in research and training activities under this funding mechanism. Possible topics include making the most of an Early Career grant, establishing long-term career goals and areas of expertise, and transitioning from an Early Career grant to a Special Education Research grant. In addition, PIs in the advanced stages of their projects will also have a chance to share lessons learned and tips regarding grant management and useful training activities.
Open Networking
These open Zoom rooms will provide an opportunity for attendees to informally connect and network with colleagues around a topic of their choosing.
Wednesday, may 17th (3:45 pm - 4:25 pm)
Networking Session - Meetup of Fellows on IES-Funded Training Grants
This networking session will bring together fellows on IES-funded training grants. Fellows will have an opportunity to meet, share their areas of research, ask questions about IES, and discuss their experiences and possible next steps after the IES-funded training.
Networking Session - Advancing Science Education Now and in the Next 20 Years
Despite decades of investing in science education research, there continues to be limited evidence of effective programs, policies, and practices for improving student learning and achievement. Come engage with colleagues in a “mini-hackathon” to brainstorm innovative approaches, including possible quick turnaround opportunities, to move the science education field forward.
Networking Session - Determining Next Steps for the Statistical and Research Methodology (Stats/Methods) grant program
Stats/Methods debuted as a separate grant program in fiscal year (FY) 2009 (previously IES had funded 14 methods projects through the Unsolicited grant mechanism) and added Early Career in FY 2014. As part of the 20th Anniversary, NCER would like to consider how best to determine its value, disseminate the findings and products, and identify revisions to increase its future success in supporting the development of statistical and methodological products to enable education scientists to conduct rigorous education research. In this session, participants will informally discuss: • How to take stock of and disseminate what has been produced from the 115 Stats/Methods projects? • Is there value in targeting specific methods for development and, if so, how could that be done? • How to increase the number of Early Career applications funded (14 out of 70 Stats/Methods awards made since FY 2014)? • How to support calls for improved mixed methods and qualitative methods? • Options to improve the Stats/Methods grant program and the dissemination of its findings and products.
Networking Session - Launching Learners into College, Careers, and Beyond: Supporting Diverse Populations
This series of networking sessions will bring together researchers interested in special education, transition, career and technical education, postsecondary, and adult education research. During the Wednesday session, participants will have the opportunity to make connections with other researchers studying how to best support different populations of students as they pursue postsecondary education and/or careers. Attendees in each session will share insights from their work in a lively “popcorn” (round-robin) format, learn about others’ work and perspectives, and leave with plenty of food for thought.
Open Networking
These open Zoom rooms will provide an opportunity for attendees to informally connect and network with colleagues around a topic of their choosing.
